How many times have you heard that small business owners are so busy working IN their business that they forget to take a step back to dedicate time to working ON the business?
By that I mean checking in that the financials are sustainable (income and expenditure), that the employees are adequately trained and can support the business as it grows, that you have the right people in the right job, that time isn’t being wasted with processes that are clunky and inadequate, that the business relationships are positive and rewarding, that sufficient positive energy is being generated through a great company culture, proper planning for projects to ensure progress and delivery, development of core competencies, staff are healthy, and finally that business investments are being planned for and managed.
In other words, the business owner is constantly checking that all the elements are in balance (think McKinseys 7s model) to support the direction they want to go with the business. (That’s if they are thinking ahead at all!!)
So some business owners don’t do this at all.
What about those of you who don’t have a business?
Have you thought of the business of YOUR LIFE?
Somewhere along the line you may find love, start a family, have teenagers and all that goes with that stage, be looking after or considering the future of elderly parents, thinking of retiring or changing jobs, just be ten years older and not doing what you thought you would be doing.
What habits will you have put into place so that you keep your financial and time resources, your energy for the inevitable changes to come and long term investments in balance?
Hmmmmm … worth considering or you could be chasing your tail until you are ready to retire and will have plenty of time and not energy or resources to enjoy it.
Remember the small business owner …
When the business owner fails to Work ON the business NOT IN the business, the statistics show that many businesses fail due to lack of capital (9%), lack of business ability (12%), excessive drawings (10%), personal reasons (13%) 1 and a myriad of other reasons all with a root cause in strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, style and staff (McKinsey again).
Back to you …
